Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation of faith for Saint Philip’s Members, 2024

The Sacrament of Confirmation, Reception into the Church, or Reaffirmation of one’s Christian faith are offered once a year at a Bishop’s visit, and once a year in Phoenix at a Diocesan service.

This year’s visit to Saint Philip’s is on Sunday, February 4th, 2024, with Bishop Kirk Smith, retired Bishop of Arizona. The Diocesan service will be officiated by Bishop Jennifer Reddall on Saturday, May 11.

Adult members of the Church and those 13+ are welcome to participate in preparation for Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation. Not sure if you are a member? Please contact Cheryle at FrontDesk@stphilipstucson.org.

Confirmation is an opportunity to express a mature commitment to Christ, and to receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. The service echoes the Baptismal promises often made on our behalf, or made some time ago.

Reception and Reaffirmation is the rite for those who have made a mature commitment of faith in another Christian fellowship (such as adult baptism or confirmation in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or many Lutheran churches). They are already considered confirmed in the Episcopal Church. People in this situation who wish to make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their baptism in the presence of an Episcopal bishop can be received into the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation is offered for those returning to the Church after an absence or for those who wish to express their commitment in the context of worship with the community (excerpted from Walk in Love, by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe).

In order to serve on the Vestry and in Diocesan offices, one must be Confirmed or Received.
